Candles made from oranges

A candle is a solid block of fuel (commonly wax) and an embedded wick, which is lit to provide light, and sometimes heat. Today, most candles are made from paraffin. Candles can also be made from beeswax, soy and other plant waxes, and tallow (a by-product of beef-fat rendering).

Candles made from orangesFor this candle you need orange, oil or tallow, thread and matches.

Could you use shortening instead of oil? I’d prefer to use something soild so I don’t burn the house down, but I love this idea! I suppose I could melt wax and pour it in there with a wick and allow it to harden, but if I can just slap some Crisco in there (maybe add some essential oils) that would be so much easier.

These are very dangerous! If they are bumped or jostled they can (at best) send hot oil all over someone, or (at worst) catch your house on fire!

Should be quite safe, because cooking oil is not particularly flammable. The moment the wick is covered by oil (tipped or falls over) it will extinguish itself.

But you might want to make a proper base for the orange to prevent it from tipping over and spilling oil all over the place (which would be a tripping hazard).
